"Reaching One" Session 2 "Warning!" 2/15/12

Review:
Last week we studied about the call to carry out the gospel that God gives to us. Everyone is expected to talk about God with others. It is not an option as some have come to believe.
We sing all of these songs about how the “whole world” will hear the gospel, but how does that take place? Is it only in speaking to multitudes? Can we only accomplish this by taking on the world? No. We carry out the mandate of the great commission one person at a time.
God wants us to pour our lives into people and focus on helping disciple them. We need to take Jesus’ example and really concentrate on reaching people AND making sure they are entering into discipleship.
Will everyone come to Christ? Will everyone be radically changed? No. Even Jesus started with 12 and ended with 11.
Have any of you shared Christ with someone this past week? Tell us your story.

Introduction
*Colossians 1:28-29, 28 Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. 29 For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.”
This is our focal verse for this study. It gets into all of the details of not only why we need to share our faith, but how God doesn’t expect us to do it of our own power.
We covered the issue of commitment in our lesson last week. We need to be committed to proclaiming Christ. We need to be committed to talking about Him to our friends, to be open about what God has been telling us. Proclaiming isn’t something that we can just do on accident or by not thinking about it.
Could you imagine if someone started randomly yelling things that came into their head? You only do something like that if you have a screw loose somewhere. Proclaiming Christ takes commitment and wisdom.
Tonight we will look at the second part of verse 28, “…warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ.”

Warning!
What jumps out at you in this verse? God wants us to go through life and maybe, if we have time, we might mention Jesus to someone, but it’s not that big of a deal is if we don’t. Wrong! This second thought completely supports the first statement. Him we proclaim warning everyone.
What would be a good reason to warn someone? Ask for examples: “Their house is on fire and they need to get out.”
What is typically found in a warning? Information on avoiding possible harm. Here are warnings on the side of a cigarette box:
·         Warning: The Surgeon General Has Determined that Cigarette Smoking is Dangerous to Your Health (1970–1985)
·         SURGEON GENERAL'S WARNING: Smoking Causes Lung Cancer, Heart Disease, Emphysema, And May Complicate Pregnancy. (1985–)
·         SURGEON GENERAL'S WARNING: Quitting Smoking Now Greatly Reduces Serious Risks to Your Health. (1985–)
·         SURGEON GENERAL'S WARNING: Smoking By Pregnant Women May Result in Fetal Injury, Premature Birth, And Low Birth Weight. (1985–)
·         SURGEON GENERAL'S WARNING: Cigarette Smoke Contains Carbon Monoxide. (1985–)
You can find warning labels on all sorts of different things, but they all point to one thing, how to avoid harm. There is a sense of urgency to warnings aren’t there? What if warnings were mundane? We wouldn’t pay attention to them!
What about things that don’t have warning labels? How are you supposed to know that they could be bad for you?
Take energy drinks for example. I found this article on the New York Times website. Did you know that since energy drinks are labeled as “performance enhancers” so that they do not have to post warnings on them? Check out this section from the New York Times:
The caffeine content of energy drinks varies from 50 milligrams to more than 500 milligrams per serving. A regular 12-ounce cola drink has about 35 milligrams of caffeine, and a 6-ounce cup of brewed coffee has 80 to 150 milligrams of caffeine.
Some energy drinks contain the caffeine equivalent of 14 cans of Coca-Cola, said Roland Griffiths, a professor of behavioral biology and one of the study authors. “Yet the caffeine amounts are often unlabeled, and few include warnings about the potential health risks of caffeine intoxication,” he said.
Dr. Griffiths notes that caffeine intoxication is a recognized clinical syndrome included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Diseases. It is marked by nervousness, anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, gastrointestinal upset, tremors, rapid heartbeats, restlessness and pacing, and in rare cases, even death.
You may not have known that drinking a Monster could lead to you having these issues. Now you know! I am warning you about it. Be careful when it comes to energy drinks.
Do you see how that worked? I found out about this issue, I had to research the information and then I delivered a warning to you.
That is exactly what Paul is telling us in Colossians. Warn and teach everyone with all wisdom. Warn them, but know what you are talking about. You have to teach what you know to someone else. We have to be wise in the way we do this as well.
Do you remember last week when I used the example of sharing my faith with Tristan? I spit it all out at once and threw a tract at him. While God can use that to impact someone, we are supposed to warn people with wisdom.
Example: As a kid I was pretty much obsessed with snakes. Living in Africa gave me a lot of opportunities to see them and interact with them. I actually had several ball pythons as pets. They would wander into the yard, I would pick them up and keep them for a while, then let them go again!
There were also a LOT of very poisonous snakes. Boomslangs, forest cobras, green mambas, twig snakes, and the list goes on and on… All of which would kill you in a matter of minutes without medical intervention.
Now what did I think would be a good idea? To go out looking for them! Of course, they never seemed to be around when you were expecting them, so fortunately I never did run across any. That was probably God watching over me!
The point is that I didn’t use wisdom. I knew that these snakes were dangerous, but I was fascinated by them. I wanted to check them out and see them. Wisdom says, back off and don’t get yourself killed.
What does it mean to be wise? Basically to be smart about something!
Over and over in scripture we are called to know the Word, to study it and have an answer for those that we are warning.
*2 Timothy 4:2, “Preach the Word, be ready in season and out of season, reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.”
*1 Peter 3:15, “But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,”
What if your warning is mundane? Is anyone going to listen to you? What if you don’t really know what you believe? Is anyone going to believe what you say? There is a reason that God wants us to study up on His Word. So that we can have these answers and so we can be prepared to give an answer for the hope that we have!
There is a sense of urgency in a warning. The same thing goes for sharing our faith. The urgency is that we don’t know how much time we have. God doesn’t guarantee us tomorrow.
Have you warned your friends? Have you shown them the urgency of their situation? Have you shown them the hope that you have?

Does Everyone Accept?
Just as we saw with Jesus, not everyone will accept Christ. Not everyone will choose to listen to you. In fact, not all of you will choose to listen to me about the urgency of our message! We are called to speak the gospel to anyone and everyone, but we are not guaranteed results.
Do you know why that is a good thing? What if someone’s eternal destiny was up to you and your sales pitch? That puts a LOT of pressure on us to perform well doesn’t it? But God takes that pressure for us. He says that His Spirit will draw people to Himself. He says that He will give us His energy, His guidance, and His words to talk with people.
Does that mean we have an easy out? Nope. Like Paul said, we toil so that all people would know Christ. Are you toiling?
Example: Old lady in Africa who refused Christ even though she knew the consequences.
My question is this, you know the consequences, a lot of you have accepted Christ, but are you willing to live for eternity with the consequences of not having shared your faith while you could?

"Reaching One" Series 2/8/12

Session 1: Commitment
Introduction
*Colossians 1:28-29, 28 Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. 29 For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.”
Why is it hard to talk to other people about Jesus? We get embarrassed, we don’t know what to say, maybe we don’t fee qualified to talk about Him. Maybe you haven’t been living in a way that honors Christ so it talking about Him would mean that you would have to change.
God has really laid this verse on my heart this week. He wants us as a youth group to start putting what we know into practice. Do you remember when I challenged you to pick one person and pray for them, witness to them, and claim them for Christ? We talked about how if you could reach one person in a year that God’s kingdom would grow exponentially!
How has that been going? Who have you told about Christ recently?
This will be the third time we have discussed this since I have been at this church. We can’t just look at this command that God gives us, feel good about it here at youth group, and then forget about it when you get home tonight. So how do we get started? How do we plan our follow through? It is going to take commitment and it is going to take a life change.

The Commitment
*Matthew 28:16-20, “16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
To have a life change we really need to understand God’s call. He is not asking us to go out and take on the entire world. You against 6,993,087,574 people are not the best odds! But how did Jesus go about reaching the world? He focused on 12 people for 3 years. 1 of them didn’t even repent and follow God. Even after 3 years of spending time with Jesus! But the other 11 changed and then they changed the world.
It can be overwhelming to try and take on the world. Don’t. God wants us to focus on one person at a time. I am asking for you to commit to one person this year.
*Matthew 28:18 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”
Why do you think this would be important for us to know? Our confidence should be found in the fact that God has all authority in everything. It’s really important for us to understand that God is completely in charge of every aspect of life, even our interactions with others. When we witness to others God’s spirit can move and draw people close to Himself.
We have God’s authority living within us through Jesus Christ. Because of that we should be able to take more confidence in approaching others with the gospel. We will talk more about this in another lesson.
*Matthew 28:1919 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
What does this verse say about us? Do we have a choice in the matter? No telling people about God is not an option, God is looking for people to commit to doing this. But do you catch the main idea of that verse? We are to “go and make disciples”. What does that look like? It encompasses much more than just telling people about Christ doesn’t it?
How do you make a disciple? Let’s take a look:
*Matthew 20:20, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
To make a disciple you need to spend time with newborn Christians. You point them the right direction. You help them to understand the basics of the faith so they can grow in their relationship with God. Making a disciple takes time and effort.
This command is not just a command to tell people about Christ, but to walk with them and help them grow and be discipled.

Taking Action
Like I started saying at the beginning of this lesson, we have studied this several times now. We have to take action. Not only because God is waiting to work amongst our friends, but so that we can receive the blessing of seeing lives changed!
It is time to stop listening to this stuff here at church and avoiding putting it into practice outside of these walls. We need to be vigilant to know God’s commands and carry them out.
There is something else I want you to understand. It is found in verse 16:
*Matthew 28:16-20, “16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted.
Like we saw earlier, not everyone will believe. How many years did Jesus spend one on one with His 12 disciples? 3! And still there was one that didn’t come to salvation. Judas not only avoided seriously following God, but he betrayed Him. If you get disappointed because people are not turning to Christ every time you witness to them, don’t. Everyone that Jesus witnessed to didn’t repent and turn to God.
Not everyone will make a change and follow Christ. There are people who will hear the gospel and decide that they are not going to choose Christ. We need to understand that fact. It is hard to not get discouraged when people shut you down, but when we return to the idea that God has all authority over our interactions with others, that takes the pressure off.
If people would get saved because of our eloquence or word choice, that would change the dynamic of who God saves based off of our human ability. We would earn the honor and glory for leading people to Christ instead of God.
God can use a crooked stick to draw a straight line. God can use you and your incomplete knowledge of scripture to bring people to Himself. You don’t need a specific method or word choice to “impress” people to accept the Gospel.
God’s Word is sufficient, and ultimately that is what brings people to repentance. Not you.
There is another thing to understand as well. Not every one of you will take this command to heart. Some of you will. You will go home and start praying for a friend and even start to reach out to them. You will experience leading someone to Christ and see their lives radically changed. You will be a part of the greatest blessing possible on earth! And you won’t be able to get enough of it.
But others of you will not feel the need to pursue God’s command like that. You will decide that it doesn’t apply to you and you will miss out. God will hold you accountable for knowing Him and not telling others.
Ultimately the choice is up to you. Are you going to commit to reach one person this year? Or will it be the same as last year?

Dead Serious About Life

Dead Serious About Life is a musical written to appeal to teenagers. It deals with many different issues that our teenagers are faced with every day in High school. The purpose of this musical is to help students take a second look at their lives and communicate the gospel to them. This is an intense show! It doesn't hold anything back.
“DSAL” is showing at Fairborn High School March 3rd at 6pm and March 4th at 3pm. This is a great opportunity to have our students bring non-Christian friends! We will be using this event as an outreach. Ticket prices are $8, however, we have funds to cover our students and their friends. If you bring a friend (Or friends) you and your friends go free!
There is a sign up sheet in the youth wing.
NEEDS: We need church members to sign up to help in the “listening room” after the show. You will be there to take down students information and point them to Christ. There will be a professional councilor present if you need any assistance. Please sign up!

Mature in Christ

"Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ."
- Colossians 1:28
This is the second day in a row that God has laid this verse on my heart. Are you proclaiming Him today? Have you spent time with Him? Are you pursuing Him so that you are mature in in Christ?
