Him We Proclaim, 3-18-12

Scripture Reading:
*Colossians 1:28-29, 28 Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. 29 For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.”
The passage that Stephen read to you earlier has been on my heart for a little over a month. It is so easy for us as Christians to get distracted from the importance of sharing our faith isn’t it? There have been so many studies and books that cover how to share your faith, and if you need to, say something. Have you heard that saying before?
We all know that sharing our faith is difficult. If you do share the gospel you face the possibility of losing friends, of being ridiculed, or a multitude of other possible consequences. So that saying strikes a chord within us and we get excited! Oh! I don’t have to say anything! I can just live a good moral life and hope someone asks me why I am different.
Today I am here to say this: Say something and share Christ! (Is there a difference between a good moral person that says nothing and a Christian? No! There are enough silent, nice, moral people out there who don’t know Christ! Let’s set ourselves apart by being a people that says what we believe and makes sure that our lives line up with what we say.
This idea was the main thrust in the even we hosted yesterday. There are enough service projects being done by organizations that don’t have Christ. Is that important? Yes, but our main goal as Christians should be to talk about Christ. People can’t find lasting hope in a smile or a cup of cold water. Jesus didn’t just give the woman at the well a glass of water, He said I will give you water that leads to everlasting life!
I believe God wants us to evaluate our lives this morning. As we read through scripture and see how Peter and John proclaimed Christ, think about how you are proclaiming Christ with your life and with your words. Turn to Acts 4:23-31.
Before we read this passage let me put it in context for you. Peter and John were in Jerusalem. This is a short while after Pentecost and 3,000 people came to Christ. Both Peter and John encountered a lame beggar who couldn’t walk. And this is where the line Peter says becomes famous, “But Peter said, “I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!” (Acts 3:6)
Through that whole process they see another 5,000 people come to Christ! What we need to realize here is that Peter and John were thrown into prison because they were proclaiming Christ. The religious leaders threaten them so that they would never speak the name of Christ again. That is where we pick up in Acts 4 verse 23:
*Acts 4:23–31 23 When they were released, they went to their friends and reported what the chief priests and the elders had said to them. 24 And when they heard it, they lifted their voices together to God and said, “Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them, 25 who through the mouth of our father David, your servant, said by the Holy Spirit,
“ ‘Why did the Gentiles rage,
and the peoples plot in vain?
26     The kings of the earth set themselves,
and the rulers were gathered together,
against the Lord and against his Anointed’—
27 for truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, 28 to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place. 29 And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness, 30 while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” 31 And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.
Did you see how they prayed in verse 24? “Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them…” Their eyes were not focused on the fear of man, but on the greatness of God over all things!
The Christians in Jerusalem didn’t see this occurrence as something that halted the ministry being done. They saw it as a driving force, something that showed them the incredible importance of getting their story out.

Taking Action
Peter and John had taken action against anything that would hold them back from proclaiming Christ. They had their eyes focused on God so that even if the threat of being beaten or killed for the sake of Christ remained it would not hold them back.
So, why is it hard to talk to other people about Jesus? We get embarrassed, we don’t know what to say, maybe we don’t feel qualified to talk about Him. Maybe you haven’t been living in a way that honors Christ so it talking about Him would mean that you would have to make some life changes.
We need to take action against excuses and remember that the reason we share the gospel is because God rules over everything! Proclaiming Christ is an act of worship. We show our submission to God when we raise Him up. He not only commands it, but we should be proud to be called Christians.
Our culture has been trying, and will continue to try, to make Christianity shameful. Let me explain what I mean by this. What do public high school students think of a teenage virgin? What do your co-workers think of living a moral life? They think it is all a crock, that there is no worth to it. The new show “GCB” is a direct attack on the church! This is why Peter tells us:
*1 Peter 5:8, “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”
We need to be vigilant to know God’s commands and carry them out. We have an adversary whose main goal is to cause the church to be as ineffective as he possibly can. If he can get us to be distracted by other things how effective will we be in proclaiming the name of Christ?
I am not saying that we are all superhero’s of the faith and that witnessing is the easiest thing in the world to do. What I am saying is that proclaiming Christ takes a major amount of commitment. Peter knew he was weak in this area and so he prayed for boldness! Have you?
What is distracting us from preaching the gospel to those around us on a daily basis? Is it fear? Is it pride? Is it simply because you don’t think about it? Is it our schedules?
Jesus calls us to give up everything for the sake of Christ. He said that you can’t even love your family more than Him. When He called His disciples He said that following Him would mean not having a place to lay you head at night. He pointed out the sacrifice required. Proclaiming Christ requires commitment.
Example: Living in Enon, God convicted us about our time. Once we gave it over to Him we were able to start ministering to the family living next door.
It takes commitment to live a life worthy of the gospel of Jesus Christ (Eph 4:1). Let’s just think about this for a second. Peter and John were proclaiming Christ to people. Do you think you can half-heartedly proclaim something? Do you think they were distracted from their mission? No, they were committed no matter the odds against them and no matter the consequences. Why would someone go to such lengths when the possibility of personal harm was so high? Because when you have your eyes on the prize you will push through anything to see that you attain it.
We have to be vigilant to know God’s commands and carry them out! Satan knows God’s commands and is vigilant against them.

Present Everyone Mature in Christ
*Colossians 1:28, “Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ.”
You have to teach what you know to someone else so that they too may be mature in Christ. What is the implication here? That you are mature in Christ!
What I am not saying is that you have to be a Biblical scholar to tell people about your faith. I think this is a trap that a lot of Christians fall into. How does a new Christian go about telling people the gospel? “Hey how are you doing?! Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior? I have! It’s amazing!” I don’t know all the answers but come to my church and meet my pastor and we can grow together.
You don’t have to know everything to share your faith, but you should have a continuing hunger to know God deeply and intimately. As Christians we need to connect ourselves to scripture so that we can be mature in Christ.

Evidence of God
Acts 4:31, “31 And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.”
Peter and John didn’t shudder at the threats that had been thrown at them. They prayed for even more boldness to speak God’s truth. There was a tangible difference in their lives. There was evidence of God at work in their lives in no small way. The place they prayed in was shaken with the power of the Holy Spirit! They were given even more boldness to speak.
I keep challenging our students to tell me where they have seen God at work. Why is that important? Because we should be constantly in awe of the God we follow. It is important that we see God at work because we need to be reminded that God never leaves us or forsakes us. He commands us to speak His gospel to those around us, but just like those Christians in Jerusalem that prayed for boldness, He empowers us to do it!
*Colossians 1:29, “For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.”
When you look at the Greek Paul is saying that God has infused him with a miraculous power to do God’s work. Is that something that we can claim for ourselves?
Why are their Christians in China that risk being tortured and killed for the sake of the Gospel? Why are their churches in Nigeria that meet for worship regardless of the threat that Muslims may choose their church to bomb that morning?
How do Christians in those situations find it a joy to witness to others? They find joy in God’s work because they have a dynamic walk with Jesus Christ. They have been infused with a miraculous power to speak boldly and to live lives to the glory of the Lord.
Church, our confidence in Christ is rooted in our relationship with God. We need to have a faith that is grounded in Christ so that we can confidently and with excitement tell those around us about God and what He is doing in our lives. If you can’t tell me how God has radically changed your life, then why are you following Him? What is the point? If God does not dramatically change your life, why waste time here at church? (Oh, wasn’t that bad before I became a Christian…)
The world is longing for something real. If you can’t point to your life and say, “Look at how real God is!” then you may need to re-evaluate your life. If you can, then speak out! Tell your Sunday school class how great God is! Tell your co-workers how God provides!
We have to take action against being ineffective for God’s kingdom. We have to warn those around us with wisdom. We have to see God at work in our lives. Is the life you live in Christ real?

IMPACT, March 17th, 2012

We had an amazing day on March 17th. IMPACT was incredible. Everything went smoothly and that was thanks to God and all of my volunteers! We saw so many answers to prayer on Saturday. We were supposed to have major thunderstorms all day. We had many people praying that God would clear up the skies for us so that we could still go out and prayer walk and share Christ with people. For 9 days we saw thunderstorms still on schedule mainly in the afternoon. On Friday night, the schedule changed to being sunny and beautiful! Praise God!
We had a moderate crowd that attended IMPACT. Many students were out of their comfort zone and were nervous about going out to share their faith. But we had many people praying for them! We were praying that God would bring boldness and confidence and that His Spirit would lead us. God once again answered our prayers! Students who were the most fearful about approaching people became the most bold! Our students stepped up to the plate in an amazing way.
God had also made many divine appointments for us. One man that was approached by our students had been thinking about suicide earlier that week. He had been crying out to God wondering if he was even being heard. Our students reached out to him and shared Christ with him. He told me later that this was the answer to his prayers. He now knows that God does hear him and that He does care for him. Praise God!
We also had another man who was convicted of sin and turned to Christ as Lord and Savior! We have already begun follow up for him.
Praise the Lord for being at work and thank you for being involved in prayer and for serving at IMPACT. Let's not let this be a one day event. Pray that God will continue to work in us and through us that many more may see the life that is in Christ! Be bold for Him.

Francis Chan Video

This message from Francis Chan is very challenging! Take some time to watch/listen to it!
Francis Chan, Founders Week

"Reaching One" Session 4 The Plea

Introduction
*Colossians 1:28-29, 28 Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. 29 For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.”
We have torn these verses apart word by word and have seen the importance in everything that Paul tells us under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. These two verses are easy to simply skim over if you are reading through Colossians 1 in your quiet time. The amazing thing is how we can see God’s hand in the smallest details of His scripture.
Let’s do a quick review over what we have studied:
“Him we proclaim”, what does that mean for us? We have to be confident to proclaim something. It takes commitment. You can’t half-heartedly proclaim something! How do we become confident in God? We have to spend time with Him.
“Warning everyone” A warning has a sense of urgency. Warnings are supposed to grab your attention to keep you away from harm. Are you really warning people of the dangerous situation they are in before God?
“Teaching everyone with all wisdom” You have to know what you believe to be able to teach someone else about it. Beyond that, we need to use wisdom in how we approach teaching others about Christ.
“Present everyone mature in Christ” Our job is not only to simply tell people about Christ, but it is to help them grow into mature believers. What does that mean? We have to help them sculpt a Biblical worldview. We have to help them grow in the knowledge of who God is and how they need to respond to God. How do you do that without having that kind of relationship with God yourself?
“For this I toil” We have to work hard at it! It will not come to us as an easy thing, but we can’t decide to not start or give up because it is hard or because we are uncomfortable with it. We have to press forward towards the goal that is found in Christ Jesus.
“His energy that He powerfully works within me” God doesn’t leave us alone to do His work. He equips the people that He calls. Are you called? If you are a Christian, you are called. If you are called you will be equipped, but God will not equip us until we say “Here I am Lord, send me!”

The Plea
Here is the deal, there will be some of you that decide to try this out. Some of you will take God’s command to tell people about Christ seriously and you will put this into action. You will actually pursue this dynamic relationship with Him and see awesome things happen!
Others of you won’t. This is what breaks my heart. Some of you will find ways to get out of it. You will justify yourself by either ignoring scripture, or by taking it out of context. You will decide that this doesn’t apply to you, or you will push it off indefinitely.
This isn’t an easy thing is it? God doesn’t just say, “Come on in to my family. Oh, and just so you know it doesn’t matter what you do from here on out.” God expects us to glorify His name before men so that He will be exalted. Not because He is an egotistical maniac, but because there is no hope outside of Him!
A few of you went to see the show “Dead Serious About Life”. We are going to take some time and talk through the issues portrayed in that show over the next few weeks. Tonight I just want to focus on one of the characters.
Justin is one of the characters in the show that is a “Christian”. I use that term very loosely with him and you will see why here in a moment. Justin is happily living a double life. He is involved in his church youth group, but denies it in front of his non-Christian friends.
One day Andrew, who is struggling with thoughts about suicide, comes to Justin for help. He asks Justin if anyone at his church could help him and Justin flat turns him down. He says, “Church is not the answer, no one there is going to help you.”
What is your opinion of Justin? Is he a struggling teenager that is a Christian? Let’s look at it in light of this verse:
*Matthew 10:32-33 32 So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, 33 but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.
This is pretty serious stuff isn’t it? Jesus is saying that whoever accepts me before men, then I will accept them before my Father in heaven. But whoever denies Jesus before men, He will also deny before God.
Here is the thing that bothers me. If we are truly saved, why do we need to discuss this? Why are we not overcome with the incredible nature of God to the point that we can’t wait to spend time with Him? Why are we not overtaken with the amazing power of God in our lives that we can’t stop talking about Him?

Francis Chan video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIG8JHT_hWY&feature=youtu.be Specifically from 25:10 – 27:37, but the whole message is good! If you love someone, you don't just let them go down a path to eternal destruction. You have to speak up!

Paul said this about the church in Colossae:
*Colossians 1:3-6 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel, which has come to you, as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and increasing—as it also does among you, since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth,”
The people in the church at Colossae didn’t need to be told to get excited about God! They were overcome with the truth of the Gospel and the grace of God that now was theirs! The love that they had for each other was heard about beyond their town walls. There was fruit produced because of their walks with God.
Is that something that marks you? Is that something that marks our youth group? Our church? Or is it more about the drama? Why is it that we get more excited about the new gadgets that Apple puts out than about salvation? Why do we put more time and effort into doing our hair or our video games than in spending time with God?
Life is a vapor. As you get older you start to see how true that really is. Our meager 70-100 years here on earth doesn’t last very long at all. My life is already a quarter of the way gone, if I live to be 100.
What do you think will last after you die? Your wealth? Your influence? Your name? Maybe after a generation. If you are lucky. Maybe two. What do you think will matter 1,000 years from now? How about 100,000 years from now?
Scripture has an answer to this question:
*1 Peter 1:24-25 24 for “All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, 25 but the word of the Lord remains forever.”
Grass withers and flowers decay. The only thing that lasts forever is the word of God.
Victoria and I watched an episode of “Doctor Who” last night. The entire show took place at the end of earth. It was supposed to be 500 million years in the future. After Earth explodes one of the main characters says something pretty profound. “All of that history is gone, blown into bits of rock and dust.” Nothing will be remembered of earth after that point.
The point I am trying to make here is that there is nothing in this lifetime or 100,000 lifetimes that is more important than sharing Christ with someone else. It is the only thing that will make an impression on eternity and will be the only thing that will last.
*1 Peter 1:22-23 22 Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, 23 since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God;
Did you catch that? You have been born again through Christ, not of a substance that will die away, but of something that is eternal. You have been born again into something that will last forever!
The only thing that will last in eternity is how faithful you were to God in telling others about Christ.
Let me revisit my question from earlier. Why don’t we get more excited about salvation and the incredible truth of God? We have started looking at everyone else around us and said, “Well, God only works like that for other people. No one I see has that kind of dynamic walk with God. Let’s just stay comfortable like everyone else.”
If you are excited about what God is doing in your life than why would you stay silent about it?
Example: I am excited because God is at work through the Bible study at GCCC. The superintendent has told the teachers involved that they cannot afford to lose the Bible study. Several of their main trouble makers have been coming to our Bible study regularly for the past year. They don’t go to church anywhere else so this is the only connection to God that they get during their week.
These troublemakers have been staying out of fights and have been looking for godly wisdom from our Christian teachers! God has begun to work in their lives to the point that the school’s demeanor has changed.
Students are stepping up for each other when someone is getting bullied. Other non-Christian teachers have been consistently giving us prayer requests because they know that God is really at work.

Guys, we have a dire need to understand that God is still at work amongst His people. We don’t live in the dark ages. We have a God that is working and that is eager to work in your lives. The only way that we will see change happen within our lives, within our youth group, even within our church is if we start to get excited about what God is doing.
If we do not share, everyone else assumes that we are in the same place they are. If we don’t speak up here in church and boldly tell our brothers and sisters what God has been doing, why on earth would you think you will be able to share Christ before men?
